Every once in a while, there comes a time in a parent’s life when you will need to leave your precious child or children in the care of someone else. This means you now need to find a babysitter. This can be frightening when you first think about it, but it will all be okay in the end. It is understandable that you want to find just the right person. Someone that enjoys your children, takes great care of them, and is worthy of your trust.

It can be common to want to stick to only letting close friends or family members step in as a babysitter when you need to be away. Sometimes, that won’t be possible, and you will need to hire a stranger. If this happens, try to ask your friends and neighbors if they can recommend a good babysitter.

If it turns out that your friends and neighbors are unable to help you out by giving you a referral, you will need to start your search elsewhere. The local phone book is a great place to start. Put those yellow pages to good use by searching under “child care” for someone to care for your kids.

Once you make contact with the agency, you will need to take a few minutes to conduct an over the phone interview with the potential babysitter. First, find out what the charges are for their services. If these are in your price range, ask them if they have become certified in CPR, and if they can give you the names and contact information of at least three personal and professional references.

The next step in hiring a babysitter is to contact the references that they provided to you. Ask the person both what the best thing about hiring this person or agency was, and what the worst thing was. You will need to know all of the good and the bad in order for you to make a proper decision.

If you were happy with the information that you received from the references, you can now set up a time for the babysitter to come to your home and meet you and your precious family. The purpose of this meeting is to see how you all interact with one another in person. Take a peek and see how the kids act around the potential sitter when they do not know that you are watching from an area close by.

The most important thing to consider before completing the hiring process is whether or not your children feel comfortable with the person. Ask the children how they felt and if they have any concerns that they would like to bring to your attention.

If all turns out well and you and your family have all come to the agreement that you would like this person to become your new babysitter, then you have made it though the process! Time for a celebration! Pick up the phone and let the person or agency know that you would like them to be your babysitter when you are away. Now let the fun begin!
